Northwest Florida Water Management District
has jurisdiction over 11,305 square miles in Florida’s
Panhandle. The District consists of 16 counties including
Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes,
Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla,
Walton, and Washington Counties and the western most
portion of Jefferson County.
The District is responsible for
managing the groundwater and surface water resources
of the Panhandle area. Responsibilities of the District
fall under two main categories – Resource Management
and Resource Regulation. Major goals of the District
are: To ensure adequate water supply; Provide for the
protection and enhancement of natural systems; Minimize
harm from flooding; Protect, maintain, and improve the
quality of the water resource; Enhance public awareness,
understanding, and participation in comprehensive water
resource management; and Develop the District’s
overall water management capabilities.
